The opening bass guitar riff of "I Must Have Been Blind" seems to be taken from Curtis Mayfield's classic "People Get Ready." This may not have just been a coincidence, even though Buckley's folk-jazz fusion is quite different than Mayfield's pioneering soul songs. Buckley does effect a certain soulfulness in both his lyrics and vocal. Like many of his songs of the period, this one has a romantic, sensual lyric, and it flows effortlessly from start to finish. Some subtle, psychedelic percussion flourishes fill out the recording to great effect on this fabulous, confessional song.
